Glimpse of the Past #11: The Seaver Block

You can catch the the Seaver Block in Barton, Vermont in our eleventh “Glimpse of the Past” with The Barton Chronicle.

Built in 1878 by W. I. Robinson, the Seaver Block contained various stores and offices and also had an auditorium where many meetings, graduations and concerts were held. It even was used for roller skating!

Harley T. Seaver, who had run a hardware business with his father and brother in North Troy purchased the block and opened his own store. Although Barton had electric lights, the closeup of the store windows shows that kerosene lamps were still in use by many of the more rural customers. On March 25, 1929, fire destroyed the building and it was replaced by the Barton Memorial Building which remains today.
