Historic Green Spaces

Our Historic Green Spaces Projects include a series of projects designed to recognize, appreciate and preserve the history and future of the natural environment on our 60 acre campus in Orleans County. Find more on each of the projects underway below.

Heritage Apple Arboretum

Museum staff and volunteers partnered with the Northwoods Stewardship Center to establish a Heritage Apple Orchard & Arboretum Map. The orchard is just beyond the pond in the photo below.

Twilight Educational Trail

Our brand new Twilight Educational Trail spans more than a mile of our beautiful, pastoral campus. Funded by the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation Recreational Trails Program, the trail includes a family loop and interpretive signs along its entire length. Step onto this trail to take a journey through our own human and natural history.

Learning Apiary

Our learning apiary got off the ground with funding from New England Grassroots Environmental Fund and the Vermont Community Foundation. It features four beehives located behind the Alexander Twilight House that are maintained by the Brownington Beekeepers. The Beekeepers are active all year, maintaining our hives and educating beekeepers throughout our region with monthly meetings. Join their email list to learn more and take part.

Community Seed Exchange

The Community Seed Exchange (CSE) is a free program committed to increasing the ability of home gardeners and homesteaders to provide their own food, to encourage locally adapted seed varieties, and to foster a community of sharing. It is open to all residents of the Northeast Kingdom. The original site and main home of the CSE is at the Barton Public Library. It is also a University of Vermont Extension Master Gardener Project.
