Juneteenth Celebration

Juneteenth Celebration

Experience the inspirational opening of our new exhibit entitled “A Call to Serve: Vermont and Unexpected Voices from the Civil War.”

The exhibit showcases a unique collection of artifacts brought together to tell a fuller narrative of Vermonters’ contributions, and those whose stories often remain unheard, to preserving the nation through their sacrifices and valor in America’s deadliest conflict.

It will feature interpretive signs on African Americans in the Civil War, Black Confederate soldiers, the unequal treatment of black soldiers, the role of black union soldier Louden Langley, who was from Huntington, VT in fighting for equal pay, the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers, the contributions of Native American soldiers, Canadian, and women in the Civil War. It will also have material on the raid on St. Albans, Portus Baxter, Martin Warner Davis, and Stephen Perry Jocelyn.

Our Associate Director of Collections and Interpretation, Spencer Kuchle, will give opening remarks. This event is free and will include light refreshments, including Jasper Hill cheese samples, and a partial museum open house!
